June 2004 With the
worldwide hunger for films, thousands of young people around the globe are thinking
about making a career in the film and television industry. For some, that
means getting their hands on a video camera and shooting with their friends
in their garages or the nearby open spaces. For others, it means tapping into
connections and trying to grab a hold of that elusive job in a studio. But
for most, it means studying film somehow, in some film schools, school for
media and arts or film institute. The Unlike other
visual or performing arts, filmmaking is a concerted effort of many
individuals and assimilation of numerous crafts and technologies. It is true
that given the technological advancement in filmmaking and the knowledge
acquired from filmmaking workshops from some of the best film schools or film
university around the globe, one alone can shoot an entire movie. However,
this is not what is desired. Among the most important skills of anyone
successful in the film and television arts are people skills - the ability to
work with others and to network within the larger industry. Some of the movie
glossies are rife with stories about the horrors of "creative
differences" between temperamental stars and directors. But you can only
hope to get a start in the field by exhibiting respect for the needs and
desires of others at the same time as you develop your specific talents and
your own aesthetic vision. And this can be only learnt from working
professionals at any reputed film institute. Moreover,
learning the intricacies of filmmaking alone cannot help one to be successful
in the competitive industry, which is always laden with risks. The business
about knowing the film business and how the industry works is equally
important for a successful career in films. There are hundreds of questions
like what does it take to get a project cleared, how do you pitch a project,
how do you insure your profit in a venture, what markets are open for your
projects etc. However, the answers to these are not to be found in any book.
Only working professionals can give an insight into these vexed issues and
this can be provided only at a reputed film institute. Don't hesitate
any longer. Unless you have an uncle there in the industry, nobody will ever
call a rookie and give him an opportunity to a make a film. It involves too
many risks and so a lot of tricks are to be learnt before you can actually
set your foot in the glamour world. If you have a creative bent of mind, fire
in your belly and the ambition to make it big in the tinsel town, locate the
best film institute in your locality and enroll yourself to fulfill your
dreams. |
