Birthing center debuts in India

June 2004

The Cradle, Indias first birthing centre co-founded by Apollo Hospitals, Sunrise Medicare a joint venture of Dabur India and the Talwar Group brings a never before experience of childbirth in a non hospital environment coupled with the latest in medical technology and expertise to give a whole new dimension to childbirth & postpartum care. What makes it unique is its all- in- one Labor Delivery Recovery (LDR) Room, which prevents the mother from being wheeled into 3 different areas during labor, a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (Level III) with a dedicated ambulance, Central Fetal Monitoring and Obstetrical 4 D Ultrasound Unit.

The basic thought behind The Cradle emanates from the fact that childbirth is a special moment and it should be made a pleasant, personalized and a memorable experience for everyone involved, says Mr. Naresh Talwar Chairman Sunrise Medicare. There are special classes by experts for childbirth preparation, diet & nutrition counseling, parents & sibling education classes, prenatal exercise classes, Lamaze classes. The Cradle offers kids play area for the accompanying sibling, a gift shop, maternity wear outlet, bookstore and a cafe.

There are special birthing beds that can be adjusted to provide maximum comfort during labour and optimal positioning during delivery. Rooms include a comfortable recliner cum rocking chair to alleviate early labour pains, television and music to help the mother relax.

The Cradle has been designed in consultation with a Mothers Panel keeping in mind that the joy of delivery should blossom in an equally compassionate environment. Doing away with the gloomy white sheets, blank walls The Cradle bring with it the warmth of a home. Adds Mr. Amit Burman, The rooms, ranging from spacious suites with attendant rooms, to super deluxe and deluxe rooms, are designed to create a nurturing environment, with warm soothing colours and accessories that simulate an ambience that is comforting and non traumatizing for new mothers.

What puts it miles ahead of other birthing facilities currently in practice in India is its non-hospital environment topped with international quality standards in medicine, says Rina Dhaka, member of the Mothers panel. One feels like having a baby, when one enters The Cradle

The Cradle comes as a breath of fresh air from the other wise clinical ways of going through childbirth in a cold, conveyor belt like atmosphere in a crowded hospital. Childbirth is not an illness, why should we treat it as one?

The endeavor of The Cradle is to make childbirth-which is a moment of celebration both literally & figuratively- a positive experience.
