Mineral production up 3.3 per cent

September 2004

The mineral production from mining and quarrying sector registered a positive growth of 3.3 per cent in July 2004 against the preceding month owing to increase in production of coal, lignite, petroleum (crude), natural gas (utilized), bauxite, copper concentrate, lead concentrate, manganese ore, zinc conc., limestone and magnesite. The mineral production in the month recorded a positive growth of 3.7 per cent as compared to that of the corresponding month of previous year. The mineral sector has shown a positive growth of 5.2 per cent during the first four months of the current financial year as compared to the same period of previous year.

The total value of mineral production (excluding atomic & minor minerals) in the country during July 2004 was Rs.5,235 crore. The contribution of coal was the highest at Rs. 1,997 crore (38 per cent). Next in the order of importance were : petroleum (crude) Rs.1,597 crore, natural gas (utilised) Rs.750 crore, iron ore Rs.329 crore, lignite Rs. 184 crore and limestone Rs.132 crore. These six minerals together contributed about 95 per cent of the total value of mineral production in the month.

Production levels of important minerals during the month were : coal 288 lakh tonnes, lignite 27 lakh tonnes, natural gas (utilized) 2,584 million cu.m., petroleum (crude) 29 lakh tonnes, bauxite 848 thousand tonnes, chromite 239 thousand tonnes, copper conc. 13 thousand tonnes, gold 325 kg., iron ore 93 lakh tonnes, lead conc. 7 thousand tonnes, manganese ore 172 thousand tonnes, zinc conc. 57 thousand tonnes, apatite & phosphorite 96 thousand tonnes, dolomite 351 thousand tonnes, limestone 135 lakh tonnes and magnesite 34 thousand tonnes.

During July 2004, the output of bauxite increased by 38 per cent, lignite 24 per cent, zinc conc. 11 per cent, natural gas (utilized), lead conc. and magnesite 6 per cent each, coal, petroleum (crude) and limestone 3 per cent each, copper conc. 2 per cent and manganese ore 1 per cent as compared to the preceding month. However, the output of gold decreased by 17 per cent, chromite 12 per cent, apatite & phosphorite 5 per cent, dolomite 3 per cent and iron ore 1 per cent.
