All India consumer price index for agricultural and rural labourers increases

The All-India Consumer Price Index for Agricultural and Rural Labourers (Base 1986-87 = 100) increased by one point and two points respectively during February 2007 to stand at 392 points for Agricultural Labourers and 393 points for Rural Labourers.

The rise and fall in index varied from state to state. In case of Agricultural Labourers 16 states reflected an increase in indices ranging between 1 to 6 points while in four states the indices went down by two points.

In case of Rural Labourers, 15 states reflected an increase ranging between 1 to 5 points, in four states the indices fell by one to two points while in one state the index remained constant.

Rajasthan experienced a sharpest increase of 6 points and 5 points in respect of Agricultural Labourers and Rural Labourers respectively. The rise has been mainly due to increase in the prices of Wheat/Atta, Jowar, Maize, Moong Dal, Groundnut Oil, Milk, Ghee, Onions, Green Chillies, Vegetables & Fruits, Beedi and Anacin. On the other hand, the indices in respect of Orissa and West Bengal for Agricultural Labourers and Manipur and West Bengal in respect of Rural Labourers recorded the maximum decrease of 2 points each mainly due to decrease in the prices of Wheat Atta, Fish Fresh, Turmeric and Vegetables & Fruits.

Punjab with 423 points for Agricultural Labourers and with 424 points for Rural Labourers figured at the top of the index table. Manipur with 332 points each for Agricultural Labourers and Rural Labourers respectively remained at the bottom of the index.

Point to point rate of inflation based on CPI-AL increased from 9.52% during January 2007 to 9.80% during February 2007 and in respect of CPI-RL it increased from 8.91% to 9.47% during the same period. Respective rates of inflation during February 2006 were 5.00 % and 4.66%. The All-India Consumer Price Index (General & Group-wise) has been as follows:
