Water Resources in Tamil Nadu

Dr S Lakshmanan

A natural resource is anything found by man in his natural environment that he may in someway utilise for his own benefit.

A little over half of the crop area of the state of Tamil Nadu is under irrigation. Canals, tanks and wells contribute, more or less, equally to state irrigation.

The role of irrigation in curbing instability of agricultural output in Tamil Nadu, drew attention to the increasing instability of food grain output in the Indian economy.

Ground water irrigation in Tamil Nadu, has certainly promoted the cultivation of non-food grains much more than that due to tanks and canals. Surface irrigation here is designed for supporting rice cultivation. Since well water is very expensive, well owners find it advantageous to use it for growing more remunerative lightly irrigated crops for which they construct a network of field channels that permit a lot of diversity in crop pattern also.

With regard to expenditure pattern for major and medium irrigation sector, the Government expenditure has not been uniform.

Therefore, the following measures are suggested for optimum utilisation of water potential in Tamil Nadu:

v      Opportunity for conservation

v      Re-use in irrigation

v      Better industrial use of water

v      Drinking water use

v      Optimum use of water in offices, garden, social functions, parks, etc.

v      Use of water for cattle management

v      Re-use of industrial waste water

v      Re-use of agricultural waste water

v      Development of research and technology on re-use of water from any source

v      Proper publicity for better use of water by the people with out any wastages
