Two Historic cricket matches to be played in Bangladesh - Blind Cricket

WhiteArrow News Service

Bangladesh, the tenth country to achieve Test status is all set to host its ever Test Match. This historic match is played between India and Bangladesh. Coinciding with this is another landmark of sorts as India and Bangladesh to also take part in the Blind Cricket Event. This event is held to showcase and promote blind cricket. CricInfo.com, the worlds largest cricketing website will sponsor the Indian contingent.

The exhibition match will take place on day three of the Dhaka test match, i.e on 12th November 2000. The modified event would feature an eight-member team on each side, who will play a demonstration game. This demo cricket will be played for nearly thirty minutes during the lunch break of the test match.

In a statement to the media, Mr.George Abraham, Chairman of the Association of Cricket for the Blind in India (ACBI) and The World Blind Cricket Council (WBCC), said that it would be the first such event in the Asian context. The objective of the event is to launch cricket for the blind in Bangladesh, as part of WBCCs efforts to increasing the number of teams playing the game. He said that the ACBI was happy that there has been some positive support from sponsors like CricInfo.com, who for example have come forward and made this event in Bangladesh a reality. He wishes that there were more such sponsors who would genuinely understand the needs of promoting this sport.

In a statement to the press the CEO of CricInfo Mr.Murari Venkatraman said, Its always been CricInfos endeavour to promote and support and cover cricket in any form. The association with Blind cricket is one other such effort through which CricInfo reaches the cricket fan by providing them with not just the obvious live International matches but also brings to them whatever form of cricket they follow at any level.

Mr.Venkatraman further adds CricInfo covers matches right from Test matches and ODIs played by all the test playing nations to the matches played by countries who have recently taken to the game, to under 22, under 19, under 14 matches to Women’s cricket and veteran cricket. Hosting the official sites of eight out of the ten Test playing nations along with the ICC and having a close association with them has helped us in this endeavour.

The Blind Cricket event would be covered live on the CricInfo site along with the live coverage of the First Test Match played by Bangladesh. The India Bangladesh Test Match could be followed along with other interesting features like audio interview with players, top performers of the matches, in-depth analysis of the game and a hoard of other information and interactive features like player profiles, games, competitions, etc on www.cricinfo.com. The test match being most significant to Bangladesh is also important to India, as the team would look at performing well and making good the opportunity they missed in the ICC Knockout and Sharjah Cup.

Origin and Growth of Blind Cricket:

The game has its beginnings in 1922 in Melbourne, Victoria where it was first played at a hostel in Prahran. At the time of a Test Match, town residents thought blind people could play cricket as well, and put rocks in a tin can and began to play a crude version of what we play today.

In India the game started as way back as 1970, however it progress began with the Australian teams visit to India in 1980.

It is also important to note that International cricket, The World Cup and the formation of the World Blind Cricket Council were all initiatives taken from India. The World Cup of Blind Cricket is held every four years and the First World Cup was held in India during November 1998, which was again covered on CricInfo.

For those who want to know the major differences between Blind Cricket and the Cricket that we are familiar with, some basics are detailed as below.

Basic Rule Changes

·         The team is made up of a mixture of vision impaired and totally blind players

·         The game is played with an audio ball made of hard plastic and filled with tiny ball bearings

·         Bowling is under arm and the ball has to pitch once before the mid pitch

·         The bowler gives an audio clue before bowling and the batsmen gives and audio clue when he is ready

·         The wickets are screwed together to ensure they are aligned

·         The boundary is 45 yards from the pitch

·         A team comprises of 11 players

Apart from these minor alterations to the rules, the game of Blind Cricket is very similar to the game we all know.
