A walk in the clouds Nisha Jose This is an invitation to join the Airline Industry. If
your ambition were to soar high and reach the skies then the Airlines
Industry would be an ideal career choice. With the emergence of the global village
air-travel has become a common part of the itinerary of globe trotting
professionals. The main areas of work can be broadly classified as Ground Crew and Cabin Crew. Ground staff working in areas like passenger services,
ticketing etc. ensures that the passengers do not face any hassles in the
procedures leading to boarding a flight. The more technical jobs like those
of the Air Traffic Control Personnel,
Cargo and Aircraft Maintenance Personnel warrant the safe and efficient
operation of the planes. Airport administration is carried out through
appropriate management functions of Personnel, Legal, Commercial, and
Economic Planning etc. The Cabin crew comprises of the pilot, co-pilot, flight
engineer, airhostesses and flight attendants. The pilot shoulders tremendous responsibility. Even in times of
crises, the pilot is expected to remain composed and it is his / her crucial
decision that can improve or worsen a situation. Specific responsibilities
include planning the flight based on factors like weather, route, type of
plane, and also ensure that all the aircraft systems are functioning
properly. Usually two pilots, the captain
and the co-pilot / first officer
control the plane. In larger airplanes, a flight engineer also accompanies the cockpit crew. This team
splits among themselves responsibilities that begin with gearing the plane
for flight till touchdown at the destination. The flight management computer
and autopilot takeover once the plane is in air. Training Procedure: The minimum qualification for applying to a training
course for a pilot is 10+2 (Physics and Mathematics). Obtaining a flying
license is the first rung in the ladder. A trainee has to go through the
stages of achieving a Private Pilot's License (PPL), a Commercial Pilot's
License (CPL) and a Senior Commercial Pilot's License (SCPL) before getting
an Airline Transport Pilot's License (ATPL) after putting in the stipulated
flying hours. The next step would be to join a particular airline to get
trained to fly an aircraft. The initial position is that of a First Officer /
Co-Pilot. After adequate training and upon fulfilling stated eligibility
criteria, the position of a Captain can be achieved. Some training institutes are: ·
