Does the past intrigue you?

Nisha Jose

Dig and pore into the secrets of the bygone and unearth facts about our ancestors. So if you 'dig' the past, then 'Archaeology' is the name of the game. An indefatigable mind and a yearning to unravel what lies in the past are indispensable qualities an Archaeologist must possess. Archaeology is a multidisciplinary subject with each subject complementing the other. Related subjects include anthropology, botany, geology, numismatics, paleontology etc. Excavations, explorations, research - there is excitement galore!

In India, the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) established in 1861 operates under the Ministry of Tourism and Culture. Its major functions include exploration, excavation, maintenance and preservation of 'protected' monuments and sites etc.

Some of the specialisations offered in Archaeology are described below:

An Artifact Illustrator prepares images of the discovered artifacts. An Epigrapher studies and deciphers the meanings of ancient inscriptions. A Faunal Specialist analyses animals and other biological objects found at the site. Field Technicians conduct simple surveys and excavations and prepare maps under the supervision of a principal investigator. A Floral Specialist analyses plant remains collected from the site and determines the species. A GPS Technician utilises software to produce maps and digitilises data from geographic information services. A Numismatist studies old coins, tokens, paper money and other related objects.
