How to write the Review of Literature page?

Dr N Balakumar

Review or Survey of Literature Chapter surveys earlier research works related to your area of study. While writing this chapter, you will chronologically arrange the contents.

This Chapter is important since it depicts the dpth of your reference or home work.

Based on your research objectives it focuses and confines to the prior research works. For example, if your project topic is “ Changing Perceptions and Brand Preferences in Second-ties Indian cities with reference to Innerwear Market “, you can limit your survey of literature chapter with reference to India. You can say that based on your chosen topic and research objectives; you have not considered studies related to innerwear market outside India. This will also save your time with regard to this chapter.

Please remember that you are repeating other researchers’ works in this chapter. You are only summarizing their work. While doing so, you will mention the name of the researcher, period of his/her study, sample size of the study, methodology and key findings.

An example is given below:

In the study conducted by Sharma, J.L. and Kennedy, E.R. (1977), the stock prices of BSE had been examined and compared with that of New York and London Stock exchanges. They employed runs test and spectral analysis. They used the Bombay Variable Dividend Industrial Share Price Index, and their study considered a sample of 23 companies, for a period of 11 years from 1963 to 1973. They concluded that stocks on BSE obey a random walk and were equivalent in this sense to the behaviour of sock prices in the markets of advanced industrialized countries.
